Job Opening: Communications Specialist

Overview

In collaboration with staff and volunteers of a progressive Episcopal congregation,

create/support internal and external communications using electronic, print, and broadcast media;

Work with others to refresh branding, refine Style Guide, and redesign website;

Evaluate and advise regarding communication methods/technology used; and

Assist with audit and assessment of current and ongoing communication across all platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Internal and External Communications
    • Primary responsibility for designing, creating and publishing internal and external communication using electronic, print, and broadcast media, including these current forms:
      • Electronic
        • Weekly e-newsletter (currently using Constant Contact)
        • Facebook page (publish, respond, and assess)
        • Website
        • Digital Signage (currently using DoPublicity; transitioning to YoDeck)
      • Print
        • Bulletin promotional blurbs
        • Periodic postcards
        • Regular print ad (Anchorage Daily News)
        • Seasonal print ads in various publications/media
      • Broadcast
        • Weekly podcasts
        • Assessing possibilities of other broadcast media
    • Brainstorm, plan, and schedule communications along with staff and volunteers.
    • Work with others to audit, assess, and improve current and ongoing communication across all platforms, including evaluating and advising regarding new technologies
    • Edit communications received from staff and volunteers to match Style Guide, communication plan, and the culture of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, progressive Christianity, and The Episcopal Church
  • Branding, Style Guide, and Website Design and Management
    • Work alongside external professionals and parish staff on refreshing branding, refining Style Guide, and website redesign
      • Branding and Website redesign are scheduled for 2020-2021
    • Maintain branding and Style Guide standards across all platforms
    • Following 2020-2021 website redesign, responsible for ongoing website management using Content Management System (CMS)
    • Technical support and staff training for CMS
  • Video and Audio Recording
    • Record, edit, and present video and audio recordings, including
      • Weekly podcasts from sermons (Audio)
      • Training events filmed and edited to ~8-minute videos for distribution via our website
    • Work with leaders (lay and clergy) to design trainings that are easily shared as resources for other congregations
    • Train others to make video recordings
  • Sunday mornings
    • Provide, along with others, a welcoming and helpful presence
    • Assist clergy as needed with technical issues

Desired Qualifications

  • Graphic Design
    • Extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Microsoft Office, Constant Contact (or Mailchimp), and other current publishing tools
    • Creative eye, proven design skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with staff and volunteers
  • Targeted communications
    • Demonstrable ability to create promotion/communication material in all formats that target specific, well-defined demographics
    • Edit communications submitted by others to reach specific (stated) goals
  • Photojournalism-Style Photography
    • Excellent ability to take, collect, edit, and present photojournalism-style photographs for use in a variety of media
    • Excellent ability with Adobe InDesign and other software as needed
  • Video and Audio Recording
    • Intermediate-level ability to take, edit, and present video and audio recording
  • Technical
    • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, including
      • create and edit documents (text and text with images)
      • create and edit tables (Word)
      • import and format images (Word)
      • create, format, and edit charts (Excel)
    • Excellent skill at creating and maintaining electronic files for documents, images, and recordings
    • Working knowledge of Constant Contact or MailChimp
    • Familiarity and comfort with posting on state-of-the-art social media tools
  • Other
    • Experience at working with a team, and self-directed work
    • Interest and ability to learn the culture of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, progressive Christianity, and The Episcopal Church, including the social dynamics unique to ministry work

Job Details

Hours/Week: 18 hours/week

Working Hours: Sundays, 8a-2p; 12 additional hours, flexible within 9a-5p, M-F

Pay Range: $18-$22 DOE
