Organizational Background

Founded in 1980, Mat-Su Senior Services provides services to the growing senior population in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The mission of Mat-Su Senior Services is to helps seniors live healthy, independent lives for as long as they can, in the place of their choosing, by providing them with comprehensive senior services such as transportation, meals, chore, and respite services.

The organization is led by a 9-member Board of Directors and currently has 41staff members. The combined operating budget is approximately $3M, with primary sources of revenue coming from grants, contributions, and program service revenue. Other funding is also received from state and federal sources.

Mat-Su Senior Services (MSSS) is located in Palmer, Alaska, approximately 40 miles north of Anchorage. Nestled in the historic Mat-Su Valley, Palmer offers a vibrant community full of shopping, outdoor adventure, farmer’s markets, and family-centered activities.

The age 65 and older population in Alaska increased by 72% between 2009 and 2019. An exciting element of this CEO position is the opportunity to lead the Agency’s growth to meet the demands of the Senior population. Position Summary

Mat-Su Senior Services seeks an experienced and highly skilled Chief Executive Officer to lead and support all areas of the organization, including leadership, program management, financial performance and viability, and facilities management. The CEO will work closely with the MSSS Board of Directors, funding and granting entities and staff and volunteers to ensure high-quality services and facilities are provided to the seniors within the Mat-Su valley.

Primary Responsibilities

The CEO is the key management leader for MSSS and directly oversees all activities of the organization, its programs, staff, facilities, transportation services, and strategic planning. Other key duties include: a) working closely with the Board of Directors to continuously improve its ability to govern and lead the organization, b) building and maintaining strong working relationships with funding and granting agencies, including clear and accurate financial reporting, and c) growing solid relationships with area seniors and other partners to understand and anticipate the needs of seniors. As the critical leader of Mat-Su Senior Services, the CEO has the responsibility to ensure all agency functions and services are focused on the MSSS mission: To help seniors live healthy, independent lives for as long as they can in the place of their choosing by providing them with comprehensive senior services such as transportation, meals, chore, and respite services.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Characteristics

The following qualifications and characteristics are desired for this position. Additionally, the successful candidate must possess a passion for effectively serving the needs of seniors.

  • Strong interpersonal skills – proven ability to build and maintain critical relationships with seniors, family members, staff, Board members, community members, and donors

  • Ability to provide thought leadership, vision, and inspiration in fulfilling the mission of Mat-Su Senior Services

  • Ability to provide strategic planning and guidance to the MSSS governing Board, staff, and community partners

  • Excellent organizational and team management skills, including planning and program expansion

  • Familiarity with issues facing Alaskan seniors and programmatic responses to those challenges

  • Impeccable integrity, ability to conduct oneself with honesty and humility in all settings

  • Ability to lead and support all MSSS staff

  • Proven ability to fundraise, build rapport with potential donors, and maintain critical relationships with existing funders

  • Demonstrated passion for improving the lives of seniors through prior successful senior services leadership experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Minimum 5 years previous executive leadership experience in a not-for-profit human service organization is desired, preferably senior services program experience. Bachelor’s degree required. Previous experience with Medicaid Home and Community Based (HCBS) Wavier program will be helpful. Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures will be valuable.
