Overview The UAA Learning Commons is recruiting student employees to tutor students in STEM subjects. Tutors facilitate learning and help students understand concepts and applications in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Duties include tutoring individually or in small groups; in‑person and online hours; maintain records; participate in training; and other duties as assigned. Ability to work assigned hours, possibly evenings or weekends, and via Zoom. Requires problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work with a diverse population; and the ability to explain and demonstrate content using a variety of teaching strategies.Responsibilities Tutor students individually or in small groups (in person or online).Maintain records and participate in training and workshops.Follow all procedures and policies set by the Learning Commons; be familiar with campus academic resources available to students.Report issues to the coordinator promptly; submit timesheets for approval as scheduled; log tutoring sessions into the EAB software.Explain and demonstrate basic mathematical or STEM concepts using a variety of teaching and rhetorical strategies.Adhere to professional standards and respect student needs; keep information about students confidential.Expectations Act in a professional manner and be sensitive to student needs.Notify the Learning Commons Director and students in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel a session.Keep all information on students confidential.Support and care about student success.Qualifications To work in the Lower Division Math Lab: complete at least one 200-level math course (preferably Calculus I); minimum cumulative GPA 2.0 with a 3.0 average in math courses tutored.To work in the Upper Division Math Lab: Calculus II & III completed with B or higher; minimum cumulative GPA 2.5 with a 3.0 average in math courses tutored.To work as a Science, Computer Science & Computer Engineering (CSCE), Engineering, or Nursing tutor: minimum cumulative GPA 2.5 with a minimum of a B (3.0) in subject(s) tutored.Prior tutoring experience is preferred but not required; training provided upon hire.Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the current semester in the UA system.Ability to work a minimum of 4 hours of scheduled tutoring weekly.Prior enrollment in the course(s) to be tutored and capacity to work with students from diverse backgrounds.Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evenings or weekends; may work remotely, in person, or a combination.Position Details This position is located on the University campus in Anchorage.
