Position Summary:

The Shoreside Mechanic reports to the Marine Group as assigned and is responsible for maintenance and repair of marine based equipment, rolling stock, and marine assets. This is a field-based position that will be performed in a variety of locations throughout Alaska.

Essential Job Functions:

• Maintains and repairs Marine assets, including various pieces of rolling stock, pumps, lift trucks, etc.

• Maintains and repairs marine assets, including pumps, engines, meters, and related mechanical systems

• Verifies equipment functionality after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications

• Repairs and/or replaces damaged or worn parts

• Operates and inspects machines or heavy equipment in order to diagnose defects

• Diagnoses faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices

• Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools

• Cleans, lubricates, and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles

• Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges

• Schedules maintenance for industrial machines and equipment

• Maintains or creates an accurate service record for all equipment serviced.

• Assembles gear systems - aligning frames and gears

• Adjusts, repairs, or replaces mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment

• Cleans parts with grease solvent

• Adjusts, maintains, repairs, and/or replaces subassemblies such as transmissions and crawler heads using hand tools, jacks, and cranes

• Adjusts and maintains industrial machinery, using control and regulating devices

• Fabricates needed parts or items from stock metal

• Performs facilities maintenance work as needed

• Assists with vessel shipyard work as needed,

Other Job Responsibilities:

• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Four (4) years of related experience

• Ability to obtain a TWIC

• Ability to operate up to 26k vehicles (DOT Physical and Driving Record).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

• Ability to read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings

• Knowledge of rolling stock maintenance and repair

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as well as computing rates, ratios, and percentages.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Desired:

• Skilled in welding and fabrication

o Welds or soldered broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.

o Welding certificate, preferred

• Valid CDL with X endorsement (preferred)

Education:

• High school diploma, or equivalent

(1 year of directly related work experience may qualify to substitute 1 year of education to meet the education requirement)

Required Training & Certificates:

• Attends training sessions, seminars, and appropriate educational classes required by the department.

• Computer skills commensurate with program and job applications.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Visual Acuity: must be adequate to perform all required tasks in a safe manner.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Work is usually done in a field setting, including aboard vessels underway. Work will require extended assignments, bridging weekends, and/or after office hours. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and equipment; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outdoor weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures; the risk of electric shock; and vibration.

The employee must be able to travel by air within and outside the State of Alaska.
