Retail Supervisor

The Retail Supervisor position is responsible for supervising employees engaged in serving food and beverage in a university setting. The responsibilities include administering, supervising, and directing ongoing business activity for multiple retail outlets. An organized system of supervision and formal operating procedures is implemented. Excellent customer service standards are maintained with a focus on continuous improvement. A friendly, approachable demeanor is sustained to handle guest concerns and complaints quickly while increasing retention. Personnel are directed, trained, supervised, led, evaluated, and developed to keep them informed and motivated. The responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all assigned employees are defined and understood. Training materials and programs in various areas are developed, updated, and implemented. Food sanitation programs, including the HACCP Program, are overseen and all food safety standards are maintained daily. The delivery of high-quality food and beverages is ensured, along with compliance with applicable regulations. Work of employees in food and beverage is assigned and coordinated to promote efficiency of operations. The Retail Manager is assisted in supporting all retail operations, supervising serving of meals and beverages, and overseeing correct portion control. An active safety program is supported and the POS system is managed and trained to new hires. Supplies are ordered, stowage is maintained, and weekly inventories are conducted. Sales tracking, waste tracking, and cost controls are assisted with. Cash handling, counting daily tills, making change, bank deposits, and bank orders are managed. Employees are interviewed, hired, and trained. Department policies and procedures are enforced, performance is appraised, and employees are rewarded and disciplined. Complaints are addressed and problems are resolved. Performance improvement activities are actively supported and participated in. The position requires personal maturity and poise, the ability to remain composed under pressure, to make sound decisions, and to manage diversity. Personal drive and energy, a liking for challenges and opportunities to innovate, the ability to work independently, and the ability to assist coworkers during staffing shortages are necessary. Other related duties may also be assigned.

The qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, Alaska Food Worker's Card or ServSafe Certification, at least two years of related work experience with significant supervisory responsibilities, one year of work experience as a barista, a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three years, fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English, computer literacy including competence in Microsoft applications and web-based applications, and the ability to perform each of the essential duties listed above with a professional degree of competency. Proven success at managing multiple tasks, projects, and subordinates is required, along with an understanding of profit attainment and profit growth. Strong ability to lead, build diverse teams, and oversee training is preferred.

Working conditions and physical requirements include being frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moderate to loud noise levels, and varying environments based on the facility assigned. Physical requirements include lifting and moving up to 50 lbs, sitting, standing, walking, using hands or fingers to handle or feel, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, talking or hearing, seeing, tasting or smelling, and carrying weight or lifting.
