The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fisheries Scientist 1 located in Anchorage or Juneau!

What you will be doing:

The incumbent serves as the lead scientist responsible for supervision of the Salmon Ocean Ecology Program (SOEP) and is responsible for marine research on salmon and other anadromous fish species. The incumbent serves as a technical expert relating to marine research on salmon including conducting fisheries research programs in marine waters and estuaries of the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and the North Pacific Ocean. In this role, the incumbent provides advice on university, state, federal, and international fisheries research related to anadromous fish stocks of statewide importance.

To assist the division in pursuit of this mission, the responsibilities of the lead scientist of Salmon Ocean Ecology Program are to:

• Lead a high seas research program in estuarine and marine waters on salmon and other anadromous fish of statewide importance and coordinate high seas fisheries research programs with university, federal, and international counterparts;
• Coordinate and oversee efforts to obtain funding for development, maintenance, and administration of marine fisheries research and management programs;
• Provide expert scientific, statistical, and modeling assessment and advice to ensure that high quality and trustworthy research and assessments are used to inform management of Alaska's fishery resources;
• Author, edit, review, and communicate scientific publications, reports, and presentations on marine salmon research to the division director and commissioner, legislative and regulatory bodies, and the public;
• Represent the department to the public, media, and other agencies through consultation, outreach, and education associated with marine salmon research and management.

The working conditions you can expect:

This full-time position is based at the ADF&G office in Anchorage or Juneau, Alaska. This is a dynamic position with regular interactions with scientists, three world-class laboratories, biometricians, as well as ADF&G staff from other divisions, and provides potential for collaborations with university, federal, and international researchers. There are opportunities to travel within Alaska, the U.S., and internationally for meetings and, when necessary, can include field sampling at remote locations or living and working aboard research vessels. This position occasionally requires time working outside normal business hours and on weekends for meetings and work sessions. We offer flexibility with work schedules and options for hybrid telework.

• Requires occasional travel in-state (2-5 trips/year) and out-of-state (1-2 trips/year) typically 2-5 days in length for various meetings.
• Requires a valid passport and the ability to travel internationally to Canada and Asia is also required.
• This position may require travel in small planes, watercraft, working in inclement weather, or at sea.

Who we are looking for:

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:

• Extensive knowledge of oceanography, marine research techniques, quantitative biology/ecology, and familiarity with the principles and techniques of genetics and population dynamics.
• Experience using coordinating and curating extensive data sets using contemporary statistical coding tools and knowledge of reproducible scientific principles.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for the presentation of scientific and policy issues to a diverse audience. Demonstrated experience with authoring and editing reports and publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
• Strong supervisory skills and proven ability to coordinate and work amongst diverse staff to accomplish program goals and contribute to a positive and supportive working environment.
• Experience with program oversight including long-term planning, managing budgets, and tracking project progress.
