Summary:
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for identifying, investigating, monitoring, and reporting healthcare-associated infections. The IP collaborates with teams and individuals to create infection prevention strategies, provide feedback, and coordinate the infection prevention program. Ensures compliance with local, state, federal, and the Joint Commission standards relating to infection prevention.

Responsibilities:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

ALL:

Promotes the ANMC philosophy, vision, and mission statement, and follows organizational and departmental policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of care. Adheres to regulatory guidelines and accreditation standards. Researches professional practice guidance in support of the Infection Prevention Program. Member of the Infection Control Committee (ICC).

Conducts active surveillance activities and participates in compliance audits and surveys. Performs active infection prevention rounds. Monitors availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and negative pressure rooms. Audits compliance with cleaning and disinfection, reprocessing, and storage. Addresses concerns, educates patients, visitors and staff.

Monitors hand hygiene and transmission based precaution practices. Communicates rates to improve compliance. Presents infection control data to key stakeholders and participates in quality improvement projects.

Performs new employee orientation, updating educational materials. Provides instruction and resource support. Acts as the liaison and supports infection prevention programs statewide.

Assists with employee health vaccination and testing. Conducts post exposure follow up. Applies work restrictions related to communicable and emerging infectious diseases.

Conducts weekly Environmental Safety Rounds with the multidisciplinary team. Assists in correcting discrepancies and provides resource support. Plans and monitors construction activities and approves Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRAs). Works collaboratively with managers and staff to maintain a safe and infection free environment. Collects and enters audit data.

Consults with Infectious Disease physicians for complex cases, outbreaks, or other needs. Performs active prospective surveillance and conducts outbreak investigations. Conducts chart reviews and enters data for validation reporting. Utilizes the electronic health record and other programs to conduct surveillance. Applies the most current NHSN definitions and reports positive cases per mandatory reporting requirements. Reports infections as required per mandatory state reporting, following all HIPPA laws and regulations.

Develops collaborative work relationships with other tribal facilities, state agencies, and other local facilities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Infection Control Preventionist II

Assists with outbreak investigations. Performs data analysis and uses results to build action plans for reducing infection risk.

Leads workgroups. Performs staff training.

Reviews and updates policies and procedures, the annual infection prevention summary, risk assessment, and plan. Drafts and reviews policies and procedures by researching best practice recommendations.

Infection Control Preventionist III

Mentors other Infection Preventionists, ANTHC staff and THO partners through education, research, publication, and collaboration, leadership,

Assists with annual evaluations, fiscally responsible for department budget and annual budget planning.

Consults with the Infectious Diseases Medical Director as needed.

May assume responsibility and signature authority for the Director in their absence.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Level I

Associates Degree in Nursing. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

Level II/Level III

BSN or Masters in Public Health or related-field required. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Level I

Non-supervisory - Three (3) years of related work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Level II

Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of related work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Including

Supervisory - One (1) year involving employee supervision. An equivalent combination of experience in Infection Prevention may be substituted for experience.

Level III

Non-supervisory - Seven (7) or more years of related work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Including

Supervisory - Two (2) or more years involving employee supervision.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

All

Certification in Basic Life Support required.

Level III

Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC), Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC).
