Archaeology And Cultural Resources Program Development

This position will assist with the development of an archaeology and cultural resources program for Kuna Engineering, leading the development and reporting for archaeological field surveys and cultural resource investigations in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA and AHPA. The individual will support NEPA and related project approvals required for federal permitting and rights-of-way, working within a multi-disciplined team of scientific and environmental professionals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work in the field in the performance of archaeological fieldwork or laboratory work.
  • Complete archaeological literature review at applicable educational institutions, State Historic Preservation Offices, and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices.
  • Conduct archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, laboratory analysis, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units.
  • Participate in a variety of scientific and environmental projects under supervision as assigned.
  • Assist environmental professionals with diverse field work including, but not limited to water quality sampling, soil sampling and profiling, vegetation sampling, fish collection, noise monitoring, air quality monitoring, wetland delineation, and traffic analysis.
  • Record field observations in a concise, accurate, and legible manner.
  • Share lessons learned and strive for continual program and personal improvement.
  • Conduct and participate in interviews and meetings with tribal, local, federal, state, and private stakeholders.
  • Contribute to team efforts during cultural resources field and lab work.
  • Lead and contribute to marketing efforts for archaeological, historic preservation, and general environmental service lines to prospective and existing client base.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned.

Qualifications include:

  • BS degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field required; MS preferred.
  • A minimum five (5) years' experience conducting and leading archaeological field investigations required.
  • A minimum one (1) year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management.
  • Prior participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience required.
  • Experience working as a field archeologist in Alaska is required.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological field and laboratory techniques required.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Ability to lead fieldwork and teams of field personnel, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

Working conditions and physical requirements include:

  • Weather: Indoors/Outdoors Frequent exposure to moderate to harsh weather conditions.
  • Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Description of environment: Frequently required to be outside at construction/project sites. Also occasionally inside in standard office setting.
  • Physical requirements: Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
  • Travel: Travel required up to 50 percent of the time. Employee will travel to remote areas and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs.
