The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a Ski Hill Supervisor.

Under direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator this position programs, oversees participants, program staff and facility operations. This position will organize group activities and games, and monitors adult, youth or family activities and special events. These job tasks require specialized on the job skills, training and certifications. This position may be responsible for program registrations, facility rentals, daily deposits, cash handling, and is the on-site supervisor for onsite staff and patrons.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position working various hours on Saturday and Sunday and other non-school days that the ski hill is open during the months of October thru May. Occasional work outside of these days may be necessary.

Position is open until filled, review of applicants begins November 5, 2025.

Physical requirement and work environment:
Work is performed in extreme outdoor conditions. May be subject to frequent standing, walking, skiing, and lifting. May spend up to 50% of work time performing physical labor. May spend up to 80% of work time standing and/or walking and/or skiing.

Minimum Qualifications: Recreation

  • Minimum 18 years or older, two years recreation experience with additional appropriate licenses or certifications.
  • Supervisory experience in a recreation setting is desired.
  • Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR Certification within the first month of work.
  • Valid State of Alaska Driver's License.
  • Experience based on industry best practices and standard for any instructional work.
  • One year experience or course work in the specified field for any instructional work.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide customer service to program patrons.
  • Programs a variety of recreation classes, programs, events and activities for the community.
  • May provide specialized programs depending upon education.
  • Ability to adapt instructions for participants with special conditions or physical limitations.
  • Plan instructions to provide feedback and progression of skills.
  • Programs and/or leads recreation programs at an assigned facility, center or event.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions, and intervenes when necessary.
  • Renders emergency response as needed, including facility evacuation and respond to major and/or minor emergency.
  • Acts as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, supervisors and staff.
  • Performs specific duties outlined per activity or event.
  • Attend department and facility staff meetings and in-service trainings, as required.
  • Maintains administrative records, to include, attendance, equipment, facility cleaning logs, program registration and program rosters, daily deposits, pass/participation reports, student participation certificates and other front desk procedures.
  • Supervises Recreation Staff I, II, & III.
  • Performs Recreation Staff I, II & III evaluations.
  • Maintains facility security.
  • Enforces patron conduct protocols for immediate suspension or ejections for up to 24 hrs, as outlined in Rules of Conduct.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff and patrons, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively with various age groups.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Knowledge is based on industry best practices and standard for any instructional work.
  • Ability to develop detailed curriculum, call format and supply list before the call sessions are advertised.
  • Knowledge in teaching methods and procedures
  • Follows all required guidelines of necessary certifications

This is a non-benefited temporary position.
