Primary Responsibilities

The marine ecosystem spans a massive breadth of coastal estuaries, bays, gulfs, open ocean, and sea mounts, and includes a wide diversity of life. Projects from port expansions and jetty construction to offshore oil and wind developments and military operations require scientific and regulatory assistance to obtain environmental permits and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to marine habitats and species. HDR's marine science team supports projects throughout the country from concept to completion by conducting baseline studies, preparing permitting documentation, and performing protected species observations and compliance investigations during project conceptualization, construction, and operation.

The Alaska Marine Sciences Leader lead our marine sciences program by providing oversight and direction to our team of marine and wildlife scientists and regulatory specialists; coordinating that group's support of HDR's clients; advancing technical excellence; developing and executing strategies to continue to grow HDR's market position in the marine sciences; and supporting delivery of HDR services through billable project work. The focus of this position will be providing support for clients and projects in Alaska, but may include support for marketing and project delivery for projects throughout the U.S.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Technical leadership and staff development for the Alaska Marine Sciences Program, including:
  • Coordinating appropriate quality reviews for technical work;
  • Serving as a quality reviewer for technical work products (environmental documents and technical studies) and conducting regulatory completeness reviews;
  • Promoting staff professional certification and/or continued education; and
  • Working closely with the Alaska Environmental Sciences and Planning Lead, other Alaska peers, and national practice group leadership to track regulatory trends, technical and scientific advancements, and staffing/expertise needs.
• Project leadership
  • Serving as technical lead and/or project manager to support HDR's clients with baseline environmental and regulatory compliance for marine resources;
  • Offering and executing strategic advice around meeting environmental regulatory requirements; and
  • Leading marine baseline studies, permit application acquisition and/or modification.
• Working with local and national marketing staff to support strategic planning initiatives;
• Identify and pursue new project opportunities; and
• Serve as a point of contact for technical questions, marketing, and general inquiries related to the Alaska Marine Sciences Program.

We don't really do any deep-sea work, although it could happen…

Preferred Qualifications

• An advanced degree (master's or PhD) in Biology, Marine Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or related field
• 5-10 years of experience in environmental project management including developing and executing project scope, schedule, and budgets and managing project risk
• Experience in business development and marketing
• Previous consulting industry experience
• Familiarity with Alaska regulatory environment, Alaska markets, and public and private client groups

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• A minimum of 7 years experience
• Professional registration, license or certification may be required based on role
• Strong communication and listening skills
• Ability to handle multiple assignments
• Good leadership and organizational skills
