Communications Specialist

Summary:
Under the direction of the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist advances Chugachmiut's mission by creating culturally respectful, high-quality content across print, digital, and multimedia platforms. The role combines storytelling, writing, editing, and project coordination, focusing on tailoring messages for Alaska Native communities, staff, and external partners.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Write, edit, and publish content for internal and external audiences, including newsletters, press releases, website updates, reports, social media, and presentations
  • Assist with multimedia projects-photography, video, and audio-and manage digital archives, including Sugt'stun Word of the Week content.
  • Manage social media accounts, plan content, track performance, and engage with audiences
  • Assist with event coordination and promotion, such as morale activities, community meetings, and health campaigns
  • Evaluate communication efforts and campaigns using analytics and feedback to guide improvements
  • Design and coordinate visual content, including flyers, graphics, presentations, and videos, using software tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft PowerPoint, Canva, and others
  • Maintain Chugachmiut's voice and brand consistency across communications and visual materials under approved standards and guidelines
  • Contribute to messaging strategies and content planning that align with organizational goals
  • Collaborate with program leads, staff, community partners, and leadership to gather, shape, and share stories, visuals, and data that communicate program impact across health, wellness, education, and culture
  • Support internal communications, including staff engagement through announcements, leadership messaging, and intranet content
  • Provide technical support for communications tools and ensure accessibility of materials
  • Remain responsive to emerging communication needs and shifting priorities in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or media production
  • Experience working with or serving Alaska Native or rural Alaska communities preferred
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License and the ability to travel within the Chugach Region as needed

Hours of Work:
The work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol and non-smoking work environment.
