Fish and Game Coordinator (Sport Fish Hatchery Program Manager)
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Game Coordinator (Sport Fish Hatchery Program Manager) located in Anchorage or Palmer! What you will be doing:
Under general direction of the Director of Sport Fish, provides statewide coordination and supervision for all Division of Sport Fish hatcheries, including the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery in Anchorage and the Ruth Burnett Hatchery in Fairbanks, and support of enhancement activity in Southeast Alaska.
Per Alaska Statute- "through rehabilitation, enhancement, and development programs do all things necessary to ensure perpetual and increasing production and use of the food resources of state waters"
Key responsibilities include:
- Represents the Sport Fish Hatchery Program as a member of the Divisional Leadership Team. Assists with planning and direction of enhancement activities throughout the State and makes recommendations to Division Leadership concerning program direction.
- Maintain current levels of fish production for anadromous and lake stocking, investigate both internally and externally for solutions and capacity to increase releases and returns for angling public.
- Assures all facilities are constructed, maintained, and operated in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations in concert with departmental and divisional goals, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinates with regional and departmental staff to implement and evaluate stocking projects, and oversees egg take, tagging and hatchery contribution and performance reporting.
- Participate in Regional Planning Team, working collaboratively to develop brood stock sanctuaries or alternative brood sources to perpetuate increased king and coho salmon enhancement and/or rehabilitation.
- Review Fish Transport Permits and provide information as requested to the legislature regarding production and budgets.
- Presentations to the Alaska Board of Fisheries and other public venues on Sport Fish hatcheries and stocking.
- Hires, trains and directly supervises two Fish Culturist 3s, one Fishery Biologist 2 and one Maintenance Specialist 1 who in turn supervises ~22 Fish Culturists, Fish& Wildlife Technicians, and maintenance staff.
- Develops and implements succession plans and cross training activity.

- Insure the timely development and management of annual hatchery, support and research budgets.
- Serve as coordinator and primary contact between regional and other departmental staff concerning implementation and evaluations of stocking programs.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is located in Anchorage at the William Jack Hernandez Hatchery, close to fishing, walking, skiing and biking trails. This position will work primarily in a collaborative office environment, with occasional travel for field work and meetings. This position assists with hatchery activities such as egg takes of hatchery stocks.
- Occasional travel for meetings is required (1-2 times per year). Most travel is in state.
Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following desired strengths, (These traits must be documented in a cover letter. If you do not have experience with any of these traits simply say so):
- Extensive knowledge of fish species and characteristics, biological and harvest variables, and requirements and tolerances in relation to hatchery fisheries issues.
- Considerable knowledge of state policies, regulations, and regulatory processes affecting the conservation, preservation, propagation, and utilization of the fishery resource and its habitat as it relates to artificial propagation.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of supervision and administrative management, including planning, staffing, budgeting, purchasing, contracting and interagency agreements, and reporting.
- Ability to identify and articulate problems and issues, develop and set goals and priorities; develop strategy; monitor progress; and adjust resources to accomplish objectives.
- Ability to develop and conduct biological studies, analyze, and evaluate results, and prepare comprehensive, scientific reports and present effectively both orally and written.
Special Note: A valid driver's license is required. This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition. First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
