The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Director of Military and Veteran Student Services (MVSS).
This pivotal role provides strategic oversight and operational leadership for military and veteran student support, including VA educational benefit compliance, outreach, recruitment, and student engagement. The Director will collaborate across university departments and with external partners such as JBER and the VA to enhance services, improve student outcomes, and promote access and success for military-affiliated students and their families. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in federal regulations, data-driven assessment, strategic planning, and a passion for serving those who have served.
To thrive in this role, the ideal candidate will bring a strong background in supervising staff and managing student-centered programs, with a demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and support a complex team. A bachelor's degree and at least three years of professional experience in higher education are required, along with a deep understanding of military culture and educational benefits—experience working directly with military-affiliated populations is essential, and veteran status is preferred. Success in this position requires excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills; proficiency in navigating complex systems and databases; and a strategic mindset for long-range planning and process improvement. The candidate must also be adept at building partnerships across the university and broader community, interpreting and applying policy and regulations, and maintaining confidentiality and compliance while providing high-quality, student-focused service.
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage.
