Director of Covey Academy

Position Summary

The Director of Covey Academy will supervise the E&E Program Manager and coordinate with outside partners such as Volunteers of America, CITC, Nine Star and any other partners that assist in the delivery of educational, employment and residential services to our young people. This position will have emphasis on service delivery/system's knowledge, education and/or trade school management, data quality and analysis, leadership development of staff, being a culture carrier, and a strong working knowledge of grants and nonprofit budgets.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the Agency is founded to the staff, youth, and the community we serve.
  • Ensure the safety of youth seen by CHA (Covenant House Alaska), at all times and ensure security of the Covey Academy.
  • Actively participate in all staff meetings and training.
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with the public, including other agencies and families of the youth we serve.
  • Demonstrate an enthusiastic commitment to the job, the agency, and the youth we serve.
  • Accept and integrate supervision.
  • Provide supervision within the Agency's structure and guidelines. Seek out current information and training in the field.
Program Development and Maintenance
    • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Programs, this position will assist in the creation of a career exploration academy that provides housing to under-privileged young adults across the state of Alaska.
    • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Programs, develop innovative ways to develop the program with both established and new community partners.
    • Participate in the review, development, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with all licensing requirements.
    • Continually strive for best practices in service delivery to the youth we serve and the staff providing the service delivery.
    • Work with Director of Facilities for the maintenance and upkeep of facilities.
    • Develop, implement and ensure stable pathways in partners with workforce sector agencies (e.g. Department of Transportation)
Personnel Management and Position Accountability
    • Provide direct supervision to the E&E Program Manager
    • Act as the agency liaison for Covey Academy with other service providers and on-site partners.
    • Serve on and act as a member of the Directors Leadership Team.
    • Maintain positive working relationships with all CHA program components.
    • Integrate positive culture messaging with communications and interactions within the agency.


Budget Management
    • In partnership with the Senior Director of Programs, participate in the development of Covey Academy's budgets.
    • Manage requisition of program supplies.
    • Balance, oversee and manage budget, manage utilization of funds.
    • Attend monthly budget management meetings.
Grant Administration
    • Ability to manage and work within state, municipal and federal grant guidelines.
    • Provide all necessary grant reporting for Covey Academy.
    • Participate in Revenue Meetings as required.
Training and Development

Demonstration, completion or receive training and maintain certification as required in the following:
    • Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, human trafficking, Suicide Prevention, Cultural competency, adolescent development, mental health/substance issues
    • Identify needs in staff development and utilize resources to provide mechanisms to sustain the program's continued development.
Data Management & Outcome Evaluation
  • Ensure data protocols are implemented and staff are handling sensitive and/or confidential information securely.
  • Maintain a dialogue with the Data Manager to improve data design, quality and processes in Efforts to Outcomes database (ETO).
  • Analyze data to track outcomes to help inform program design and decisions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency or foundational experience to learn the management of the HMIS database as it pertains to our staff and programs.
Required Education

Master's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Education or related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required Experience

Experience in the field of education, trade school, residential management and/or residential (student) life. Preferred experience with adolescent or disadvantaged/at-risk populations.

Demonstrated experience providing direct supervision and evaluation of staff. Lived experience is also considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Basic understanding of adolescent development; demonstrate enjoyment of and ability to relate to at-risk youth and demonstrates empathy with the joys and pains of others.
  • Knowledge of the educational and/or trade school systems.
  • Is approachable, builds rapport well and practices attentive and active listening.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, family dynamics, crisis intervention.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and follow through on project and personnel commitments.
  • Proven ability to manage contracts and grant expectations on time while maintaining a high standard of reporting accuracy.
  • Ability to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds and with lived experience.
  • Ability to have constructive and supportive staff development conversations.
  • Strong ability to engage with an built relationship with partner agencies across a wide continuum of career pathways.
  • Support equal and fair treatment and opportunity for all, tolerance of people and processes.
  • Ability to work independently, using good judgment; maintain a high level of ethical standards and comply with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all youth and staff in the program.
  • Proficient with standard computer operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Database Navigation, HMIS and/or ability to learn and navigate grant portals.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide non-judgmental feedback and motivational interviewing with staff and young people.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
  • Able to accommodate a wide range of physical activity, including sitting for extended periods of time, traversing between buildings and sites, moving up and down stairs, lifting bags/boxes up to 50 pounds, and physically manage youth if needed.
  • Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License and have a clean driving record.
  • Pass federal, state and local background investigation.
  • Possesses personal mission and vision that aligns with collective mission and vision of CHA and ability to communicate this with the teams.

Working Conditions

• Position works in both an office setting and within the Covey Academy residential and educational building.
  • Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments.
  • Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situation
  • Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
  • Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stairways to monitor the space within a two- story building with and possibly without the assistance of an elevator.
  • Occasionally moves items up to 40 pounds while ascending/descending stairway
