PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Provides operational IT Infrastructure services for the Alaska Railroad. The Systems Engineer designs, builds, maintains, and supports infrastructure hardware and software, primarily on server/storage/virtualization-related systems. The Systems Engineer is accountable for all IT Infrastructure services according to established standards and requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities: |
Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. Primary responsibility is to ensure safety and continued train movement. |
Troubleshoots and resolves system outages or degraded services. |
Produces and maintains drawings, designs, specifications, and configurations required for systems to operate. Maintains a shared repository for all technical documentation and ensure accessibility for other technical stakeholders. |
Consults with key stakeholders to identify system requirements. Creates technology solutions involving IT Infrastructure hardware and software platforms and related support systems. Partners with other Technology stakeholders to ensure system compatibility and integration. |
Installs new / rebuilds existing servers and configures hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements. |
Builds effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Use appropriate methods to communicate with stakeholders. |
Develops Disaster Recovery requirements, documentation, and recovery solutions. |
May also perform team lead responsibilities on an as needed basis, including but not limited to project management, task tracking, team mentorship and meeting scheduling and coordination |
May occasionally be required to work along the rail belt on an as needed basis. |
May be required to participate in Incident Command exercises and activities. |
FACTOR 1:Technical and Operational Knowledge
Exhibits knowledge of system design, installation, updates, and migration processes and methodologies. Must have an in-depth knowledge of data center services and a detailed understanding of related technologies such as physical and virtual servers, storage systems, data backups, data recovery, monitoring and security. Must be capable of producing written documentation for proposals which describe solutions, including the equipment recommended, cost of the equipment, and time required to successfully and fully implement the solution. Must be able to interact with vendors and contractors to fulfill or augment service delivery. Must actively work to maintain and develop expertise and relevant products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments related to IT Infrastructure systems. Knowledge of managing user identities, roles, and permissions within Microsoft Entra to ensure secure access to resources. Experience in implementing and managing MFA to enhance security for user sign-ins.
FACTOR 2: Analytical Skills and Impact
Must have the ability to methodically perform IT Infrastructure functions within established standards, processes, and governance rules, with a focus on predictability of results and stability of the system. Must have the ability to establish reliable processes and to create and follow technical SOPs and Work Instructions at various levels of detail. Must have the ability to perform real time crisis plan development and execution, coordination and delegation of activities, communication management, and root cause analysis. Must be able to resolve problems in a timely and effective manner, involving project management as appropriate. Must be able to successfully manage relationship with vendors and co-workers. Must be able to effectively produce deliverables. Must have the ability to coach and develop others on the project team. Must have the ability to identify, assess and mitigate relevant risks during project implementation, system upgrades, and other system activities.

FACTOR 3: Supervision and Control
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Incumbent works under the general supervision of the Manager, IT Infrastructure who defines priorities and work schedules. Provides technical guidance, coordination, and leadership as needed to other members of the Technology department team.
FACTOR 4: Communication
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats. Incumbent works with internal Alaska Railroad Corporation staff. Works closely with the Manager, IT Infrastructure to define maintenance schedules and life-cycle goals for hardware and software systems. Contacts are made with vendor representatives in the research and acquisition of solutions, software, hardware and the resolution of problems. The purpose of contacts is to provide technical information, and to understand and communicate client needs.
FACTOR 5: Working Conditions
Work is performed in a corporate office environment may be approved for work from home after probation. Dexterity of hands and fingers is required to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components. Work requires on-call availability for seven days on a rotating basis with other Technology department staff. Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), such as computers and peripherals, is required occasionally. May be required to drive an ARRC vehicle.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or a directly related field is required. Professional experience in network analysis, systems administration, database administration or systems architecture may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience
Five years of professional experience with the following: server systems and Window Server operating systems, SAN, NAS, and DAS systems, VMware administration and management. Experience with Linux operating systems, and enterprise monitoring technologies is highly desired. Microsoft Certified Professional is highly desired. ITIL certification is highly desired. Must have a valid driver's license.
