Control Systems Engineer Lead

Anchorage, AK (temp to perm)

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide technical instrument engineering for small to large capital and maintenance projects.
  • Develop scope for projects in all project phases; contribute to project plans and deliverable lists.
  • Review and provide input to project plans and schedules.
  • Develop project P&IDs.
  • Create procurement specifications, documentation, and data sheets.
  • Perform detailed vendor document reviews and incorporate findings into project design.
  • Establish and review engineering budgets for assigned projects.
  • Develop Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimates and Material Take-Offs (MTO).
  • Manage work within engineering budgets, forecast efforts, and control scope and costs for multiple projects.
  • Develop detailed specifications and construction packages.
  • Write detailed construction scope of work documents.
  • Perform Factory and Site Acceptance Tests (FAT/SAT) on vendor equipment; travel may be required.
  • Conduct quality checks on own work and team deliverables.
  • Adhere to Anvil's Project Services Quality System (PSQS).
  • Work under guidance from RM and PM.
  • Guide and direct design teams in developing construction work packages.
  • Prioritize project tasks for oneself and a team of 2-12 members; coordinate with project leaders, team members, RM, and clients.
  • Collaborate with technical resource groups and project management to meet project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with vendors and clients.

Required Skills and Abilities - Technical

  • Read and develop Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Update control and instrument systems in the field, producing accurate document markups.
  • Specify and size instrumentation for various industrial control applications.
  • Recognize when unique solutions are needed for instrumentation in challenging environments.
  • Specify and size control valves and regulators, including pneumatic, sliding stem, and rotary types.
  • Understand material and alloy considerations for instruments in industrial processes.
  • Design infrastructure for industrial communication and control networks.
  • Design wiring, conduit, and cable tray methods for NEC-hazardous classified areas.
  • Prepare project designs compliant with codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Integrate control strategies with electrical motor controls, VFDs, safety relays, and monitoring networks.
  • Select and design HMI, PLC, and DCS hardware and wiring.
  • Create I/O lists and review loop drawings.
  • Understand control panel layout, wiring, and BOM considerations.
  • Possess working knowledge of industrial equipment and their instrumentation considerations.

Required Skills and Abilities - Other

  • Familiar with stage-gated project processes.
  • Effective teamwork, both in-person and remote.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop budgets and schedules for engineering and design.
  • Experience in developing construction packages for projects valued between $1MM and $30MM TIC.
  • Attention to detail and quality in deliverables.
  • Self-motivated with leadership qualities to mentor and supervise teams.
  • Ability to handle confrontational situations tactfully.
  • Physical ability to evaluate equipment in the field, including climbing ladders and stairs.
  • Willingness to travel to remote sites.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic working knowledge of INtools (SPI).
  • Specify and design Pressure Safety Valves.
  • Experience in front-end project development (FEL 1-2).
  • Understanding of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Knowledge of PLC and DCS HMI design, point configuration, and control types.
  • Basic programming skills for DCS and PLC systems.
  • Understanding of instrumentation for rotating equipment and analyzers.
  • Ability to interpret and design ladder logic.
  • Experience in creating test plans and performing FAT/SAT.
  • Developing control design documents like Control Narratives and Cause & Effects diagrams.
  • Participation in PHAs and LOPAs.

Education & Certifications

  • B.S. in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering (required).
  • 8-25 years of professional experience in oil and gas or related industry (required).
  • P.E. or Professional Engineer in Control Systems Engineering (preferred).
  • ISA or TUV certification in Functional Safety (preferred).
