    Job Summary
    The Teacher Expert, High School Counseling assists in providing a comprehensive counseling program that is responsive to student needs while also addressing the goals and objectives of the Anchorage School District. This position stays abreast of best practices in counseling and encourages staff to apply these principles and practices that enable students to be actively engaged in the learning process. The counseling teacher expert provides support to counselors and schools through recommending, demonstrating, and modeling appropriate materials, technology, and other resources that meet the learning needs of all students. This position reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Student Support.

    Job Requirements

    Essential Job Functions
    1. Meets with counselors regularly to identify professional development needs based on staff feedback and student data.
    2. Applies deep content knowledge and relevant expertise in college, career, and life (CCL) readiness, social emotional learning (SEL), behavior supports, and mental health to further district goals and guardrails.
    3. Has a deep and clear understanding of multiple performance measures to facilitate data-driven discussions and decision-making at the district and school levels.
    4. Fosters and builds relationships with all stakeholders (at school and district levels) to drive collaboration and student support.
    5. Collaborates with the district mental health leadership team on integrated mental health, crisis response, SEL, PBIS/MTSS, and trauma informed practices.
    6. Collaborates with the district CCL leadership team on transitions and academic programming.
    7. Responds and interacts effectively to requests from counselors for coaching and advising on the use of data.
    8. Provides professional development in and modeling of research-based counseling, SEL, and behavior management practices.
    9. Develops staff proficiency in culturally responsive practices to meet the learning needs of all of our diverse populations.
    10. Assists instructional staff in resolving complex obstacles to the success of overall school and district programs, as well as specific projects.
    11. Participates in and contributes to the counseling profession.
    12. Participates in meetings and training sessions as scheduled.

    Physical /Mental Demands
    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
