Summary

The Substation Engineer will ensure the integrity, consistency, and completeness of the Substation Equipment Maintenance and Testing Program through the use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and the supporting Reliability Centered Maintenance and Predictive / Diagnostic Maintenance (RCM / PdM) programs.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare maintenance project engineering documentation, order materials and supplies that meet project deadlines. Support maintenance project activities to ensure fieldwork is done according to project plans.
  • Provide maintenance project design services, including working drawings, material lists, and equipment specifications. Prepare as-builts of changes to initial designs.
  • Work with the Operations Support Technician and field personnel to ensure timely and accurate ordering of materials. Track receipt of materials in collaboration with the Support Technician.
  • Monitor the condition of substation assets and collect failure trend statistics. Collaborate with field crews and testing laboratories to determine root causes. Ensure root cause data is documented in CMMS corrective work orders. Provide statistical analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of the maintenance program.
  • Participate in Key Performance Indicators (KPI) data collection and analyze performance results. Review historical test data to identify trends indicating potential equipment failure. Recommend future maintenance actions based on KPI data.
  • Read and interpret operating data to measure failure rates. Suggest modifications to maintenance and testing programs to reduce high-risk failures. Work with the Data Technician and field personnel to ensure data accuracy.
  • Support substation technicians and linemen in troubleshooting complex electrical systems.
  • Use appropriate software tools to prepare detailed analyses of equipment condition issues. Collaborate with management to recommend improvements to maintenance strategies.
  • Assist department personnel in maintaining accuracy, completeness, and consistency of substation databases.
  • Work with the Substation Operations Manager to prepare the department budget, work schedules, and project plans. Help evaluate variances and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate planning activities across departments involved in related projects.
  • Review maintenance documentation and as-builts for accuracy. Forward to Document Control and maintain department record drawings.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Relationships

Internal: Manager, Substation Operations; other managers and staff for coordination and information exchange.

External: Consultants and other utilities for planning and technical information exchange.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of electric utility systems equipment, design, operations, construction, and maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with the Uniform System of Accounts, RUS specifications, NESC Code, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in networked computers and software applications including spreadsheets, DBMS, scheduling, and specialized tools for budgeting and work management.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to analyze equipment status trends and system demands, and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to establish professional relationships and work independently.
  • Knowledge of predictive and diagnostic equipment testing technologies.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required. Additional training in project management, utility planning, operations, maintenance, and accounting is preferred.

Experience: At least one year in electric engineering, planning, operations, construction, or maintenance. Familiarity with substation construction and maintenance is preferred.

Substitution: Additional professional experience in a similar role may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Work Environment

Standard office environment with periodic field trips. Travel may be required, including out-of-town trips, technical seminars, and conferences. Must be available during major outages or emergencies.
