Roles and Responsibilities of a Vessel Engineer

As a Vessel Engineer, you maintain the heart of the vessel to ensure it operates properly. Your responsibilities include:

  1. Maintaining all machinery, equipment, and systems, including main propulsion, auxiliary power generation, ancillary, deck, and cargo handling.
  2. Ensuring proper operation of control, monitoring, and alarm systems while maintaining a safe work environment.
  3. Implementing company policies, procedures, and maritime industry standards where applicable.
  4. Checking and maintaining fuel and fluid levels, taking monthly oil samples for analysis, managing vessel bunkering, and maintaining inventory levels of critical spares and parts.

In Alaska's remote geography, you will need to perform safe and effective repairs with limited resources and outside support under tight time constraints.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a QMED (Engineer License preferred), with a 4000 horsepower engineer license preferred.
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (PIC and HAZWOPER preferred).
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Valid driver's license and U.S. Passport.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check to enter Canada.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Legal eligibility to work in the United States.

Experience and Skills

  • At least five years of experience in the last 15 years as a Marine Engineer, preferably including three as a Chief Engineer.
  • Skilled in handling various equipment suited to specific tasks.

Working Conditions

  • Lodging and provisions are provided on the vessel.
  • Transportation to and from the vessel is provided by the company.
  • Must be physically fit to climb aboard tugs and barges, ascend and descend ladders, and maintain balance in a seaway; capable of kneeling, stooping, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, and standing for long periods.
  • Comfortable with heights and narrow walkways.
  • Must work 12 hours a day for the full season.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions.
