Position Title: Senior Accountant - Grants & Financial Reporting

Department: Finance, Divisional Headquarters

Reports to: Division Finance Director

FSLA Status: Full-Time/40 hours per week; Exempt

Pay: $70K - $75K (DOE)

Job Summary:

The Senior Accountant - Grants & Financial Reporting is responsible for assisting the Division Finance Director in managing and analyzing the Alaska Division's financial performance, preparing annual fiscal budgets, managing grants and related financial reporting, supporting audits, and ensuring compliance with FASB standards for not-for-profit accounting. The role involves collaboration with the Salvation Army Northwest Division Finance Department, including account reconciliations and variance analysis at the unit level.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • At least three years of accounting experience with a degree, or seven years without a degree.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, general accounting practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience with non-profits, fund accounting, and government grants is preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office, especially Excel (pivot tables, look-ups).
  • Excellent communication, research, problem-solving, organizational, and attention to detail skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting & Audit Support

  • Review general ledger activity monthly for accuracy.
  • Handle complex journal entries, bank reconciliations, and aged accounts.
  • Support audits and identify process improvements.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Assist with annual budgets and revisions to align with organizational goals.

Grant Management & Compliance

  • Prepare budgets for grants, maintain documentation, and review expenses for compliance.
  • Support grant reporting, reconcile receivables, and assist with closeouts.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare financial reports, run ad hoc reports, and ensure proper coding.
  • Collaborate with NW Finance for inquiries and support.

Collaboration & Cross-Training

  • Support cross-functional financial operations and ensure continuity through cross-training.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Office setting with typical physical requirements, including sitting, lifting up to 25 lbs, and long periods at a computer. Must be able to operate a vehicle and work under deadlines.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook; adaptable to new software.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions, communicate effectively, and work with diverse individuals.
  • Basic math skills, punctuality, organization, and motivation.
  • Must pass background checks and complete required training.
  • Driver's license and safety course completion required.
