The work hours for this position is from Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm.

As our Community Engagement Specialist, you will implement a wide variety of recreational, artistic expression, and skill building activities to maximize support recipients' physical, social, and cognitive skills. Every day we'll rely on you to teach activities of daily living and foster social independence. To thrive in this role, you should be passionate about helping people experiencing disabilities and comfortable with personal care. We'll teach you everything else you need to know.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support children, teens, and adults who experience disabilities within recreational, artistic expression and skill building activities and teaches activities of daily living, as well as social and communication skills to foster social independence.
  • Implement goals and objectives as outlined in the Plans of Care and/or support plans designed to assist the support recipient in building skills useful to adapting to home, school and community environments.
  • Utilize methods and techniques of teaching through which full participation in recreation, artistic expression, and skill building activities can occur.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED; and
  • One year of applied verifiable experience working, interning, or volunteering directly within a formalized recreation or therapeutic art program or leading structured group activities; or
  • One year of directly related experience supporting individuals that demonstrate challenging and/or aggressive behaviors.

Additional Requirements

  • Possesses a valid Alaska driver's license and has at least one year of driving experience (may include permit time). Obtains a driving record at time of employment, annually thereafter, and as requested by management.
  • Ability to safely operate Agency vehicles when needed. Possesses reliable transportation and vehicle insurance when transporting support recipients or conducting Agency business.
  • Meets State and Agency requirements for passing a criminal background check upon hire and as required thereafter.
  • Lifts 35 pounds from a squat and kneel position on the floor.
  • May be required to frequently walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, pull, and/or push to include participation in physical activities such as swimming, running, walking, aerobics, dancing, cooking and other recreational and other habilitative activities.
  • Completes all required State, Agency, department, and position specific training as assigned - provided by Hope.
  • Obtains a tuberculin clearance at time of employment and annually thereafter - provided by Hope.
