This position provides the opportunity to learn the fascinating world of highway design on-the-job. You will be trained to negotiate contracts with engineering consultants and will represent the Department's goals and priorities as they prepare plan, specification, and estimate packages for bid. You will help oversee project design by reviewing engineering submittals for quality, completeness, engineering judgement, and conformity with federal and Department standards; and by coordinating technical issues with other groups within the Department (e.g. utilities, right-of-way, materials, environmental, and surveying). Your responsibilities will also include developing project scopes and estimating and tracking project costs, budgets and schedules.
This flex position allows for growth and increased responsibility as experience and professional licensure is obtained. Depending on your qualifications, you may be placed at the Engineering Assistant 3, Engineering Associate, or Engineer/Architect 1 level. After successfully completing a one-year probationary period and the required training plan, you will have the opportunity to advance to the next level.
Our organization, mission, and culture:
The DOT&PF mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving through Service and Infrastructure" as we vitally support Alaska's people and economy by serving and connecting communities throughout the state. To do this, we promote an organizational atmosphere of excellence, integrity, teamwork, and public service, and we take great pride in the essential transportation services we provide the public.
The mission of the CR Highway Design Section is to develop roadway improvement projects from Planning through advertisement to the contracting community. The majority of these projects are designed by private engineering firms. Although the design will be accomplished by these consultants, it is vital that the Department have staff that manage the project processes and coordination, and the consultant contracts to ensure the success of all aspects of the projects. Your supervisor and you will be responsible for approximately a dozen of those projects, depending on size, worth several million dollars. As a team, you and your supervisor will develop and manage the contracts with the consultants, coordinate with various support groups, agencies, and local government entities, manage the scopes, schedules and budgets of the projects, maintain progress reports for management, and be responsible for problem-solving on the projects.
