DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Health Department
LOCATION: 825 L Street
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Example of Duties

Compiles strategies and projections for long-range planning. Researches and recommends policy, best practice, and funding
opportunities for department activities related to behavioral health, substance misuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, and
underlying causes of homelessness. Drafts and provides supporting documentation for policy recommendations and researches
answers to questions from AHD administration, the Mayor and Assembly, and relevant Assembly Commissions. Evaluates
effectiveness of Municipal programs to address homelessness. Gathers and evaluates local, state, and national data and reports to
AHD administration, the Mayor and Assembly, and the general public. Organizes and ensures the distribution of critical
information/data. Leads research and development of grant proposals. Represents the department on relevant boards, committees
and coalitions. Responsible for enforcement of codes, regulations, and statues for homeless and transient shelters as well as
emergency shelter plans through inspections, investigations, enforcement, technical assistance, training, agency coordination,
development of standards and for license or permit issuance recommendation. Perform other related duties as assigned.
The Anchorage Health Department (AHD) engages in the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (AHD) emergency responses and the federal Incident Command System (ICS). This includes training exercises as part of the AHD's Crisis Health Action Team (CHAT) and municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In the case of a natural or manmade disaster, AHD employees may be called to engage in emergency operations responses and recovery.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and two (2) years of experience in the field related to the position.

OR

Associate's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and four (4) years of experience in the field related to the position.

OR

High school diploma, GED or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in the field related to the position. Employment is conditional based on a satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history.

Some positions may require:

  • A valid State of Alaska Driver's License at time of hire.
  • Municipality of Anchorage Certification as a Designated Peace Officer within six (6) months of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Forms 214, DD Forms 256, NGB Forms 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
