The Associate Scientist is expected to provide project management as well as project support for other staff. Our projects range from the oil and gas sector to infrastructure development to planning.

The Field Tank Inspector Technician will be responsible for compliance tracking, field inspection, entering data into the Benchmark database, assisting the tank farm personnel with SPCC inspections, tracking waste, and updating the inventory, and other duties as requested to support environmental projects. The Field Tank Inspector Technician will train NSB DPW and contracted personnel to access Benchmark for the purpose of viewing fuel-specific records only. The field technician will be responsible for keeping waste inventory updated and labeled in the software monthly.



Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position requires monthly travel to North Slope Borough (NSB) communities (Kaktovik, Anaktuvuk Pass, Prudhoe Bay, Utqia?vik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, Wainwright, Atqasuk, Point Hope).
  • Travel and year-round field work, with working hours more than 40 per week and weekends as needed.
  • Internal and external inspection of atmospheric storage tanks in accordance with API 653 and/or STI SP001.
  • Ensures all inspections are planned and performed correctly and meet the applicable code, jurisdictional and/or company requirements.
  • Write accurate and complete reports summarizing the results of inspections completed.
  • Facilities QA/QC program support.
  • Strong computer skills for managing SPCC compliance of tank farms and waste tracking
  • Assist the PM and the Project Staff with day-to-day project management and contractual responsibilities.
  • Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels in a professional manner.
  • Review, evaluate, and interpret environmental data and prepare summary reports.
  • Spill Response, included but not limited to Performs physical labor associated with cleanup and remediation activities such as sample collection, drum pumping, drum handling, waste bulking, and hand and mechanical demolition.
  • This position requires critical thinking and analysis; frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting and carrying 30+ pounds; working in all weather conditions; field visits per project needs; ability to travel (drive or fly) to and from job sites locally
  • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing workload are primary duties.
  • Ability to work methodically and independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.


Qualifications:

Preferred/Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Earth Science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA and other federal regulations.
  • Current API-653 Tank Inspector and MFL and UT Level II certifications. Must be able to obtain STI SP001 and UST A/B/C operator certification within 180 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of basic corrosion codes and standards
  • Experience using BenchMark Software
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, gINT, MS Project

    Experience with planning, logistics, and fieldwork in remote locations.

Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid drivers license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
